Aurora Church Jazzes Up Fat Tuesday

Fourth Street United Methodist Church in Aurora celebrated Fat Tuesday with a New Orleans-style jazz concert.

Beginning at 7:30 p.m., the 12-piece Matt Erion Dodeca Band played about an hour's worth of material which Batavia resident Erion described as "Dixieland and New Orleans-style music" with a nod "to gospel and R&B."

"We thought it would be nice to have a party and focus on fellowship and have an up tempo night before Ash Wednesday," Erion explained. "I have always felt that the sound of jazz reflects the ideas of freedom, democracy and learning. With music being the universal language, we find common ground among different people and cultures."

Erion, who oversees the musical program at Flowing Grace United Methodist Church of Aurora, said a decision was made to partner with Fourth Street United Methodist this year as a way of preparing for the "more contemplative serious season."
