The Los Angeles Lakers have patiently worked Lonzo Ball back from a sprained MCL in his left knee with world-class treatment, careful monitoring and an abundance of caution. If LaVar Ball were in Lakers trainer Marco Nunez's shoes, he would have taken a different approach-one that, according to the Big Baller, would've had Zo back to playing NBA basketball well ahead of his current schedule.
"Now if he was with me, he'd be ready to go by now because I'd put him in the hills, go old school, have him do some squats," Ball said in an interview while in London for the Big Baller Brand's pop-up shop. "You ain't going to play through it, but you going to straighten up the real way. He ain't going to straighten up with me rubbing some stuff on your leg. I'm gonna make you go up the hill backwards, driving forward, side to side."
To hear LaVar tell it, having Zo run on his injured knee would be done in lieu of having him conduct his cardio work on an assisted treadmill like the Alter-G.
"All you gotta do is pick your feet up. The belt is taking your foot back," the Ballfather added. "I ain't going to put you on no treadmill. How about you go up that hill on your own. If you don't step right, you ain't going nowhere."
LaVar, though, noted that he hasn't had any input in his son's rehab, nor would he try to interfere.
"He's over there in L.A., living the luscious style," he said. "Let them do it their way."
That way will have the eldest Ball boy back in action on Feb. 23 against the Dallas Mavericks at Staples Center after a 15-game absence.
And though LaVar's comments here may seem controversial, keep in mind the shift in his tone through the video above. If you've parsed through the Big Baller's interviews as closely as we have, you'll notice how that change aligns with his more bombastic side, which he so often puts on when there are cameras and microphones around.
Which is to say, there's no actual indication here that LaVar is going to start meddling in Lonzo's medical affairs. Rather, this is just another case of an involved dad sharing his opinion when asked to do so.
