A STARTLING new book claims the nightmare scenario of a nuclear winter sparked by atomic bombs was made up by Russian spies as part of a fake news plot to spread panic in the West.

The publication, written by a former British government adviser, claims the Doomsday theory was actually a scare story dreamt up by the former head of the KGB to spark chaos in enemy lands during the Cold War.

The revelations come as Western governments accuse Russia of deploying fake news and disinformation as part of a foreign policy to makes itself seem more politically stable than its rivals.

Moscow has repeatedly rejected such criticism, including accusations that it was behind a flood of fake news aimed at influencing the 2016 US presidential election.

US special counsel Robert Mueller has even indicted 12 individuals from the Internet Research Agency, a notorious Kremlin-linked Russian troll farm.

They are accused of spewing divisive propaganda, posing as US activists and posting politically charged content on social media or through online ads and encouraging people to disrupt the political process in the States.

And it seems Russia was up to the same old tricks back in the 1980s with its outrageous nuclear winter horror story.

Those growing up during the 60s, 70s and 80s were haunted by the constant threat of World War III and terrifying visions of mushroom clouds, burning skies and tens of millions of lives reduced to ash.

And they were told what followed the initial blasts would be firestorms incinerating cities and forests, sending torrents of smoke into the atmosphere quickly entombing the planet in clouds of ash.

The resulting horror - a so-called nuclear winter -  would lead to 24-hour darkness, plummeting temperatures and the eventual death of all life on Earth.
